Ōsunaarashi Kintarō, born Abdelrahman Alaa el-Din Mohamed Ahmed Shalan on 10 February 1992 in Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt, is a retired Egyptian professional sumo wrestler and former MMA fighter. He made history as the first professional sumo wrestler from Africa to compete in Japan’s top sumo divisions.
Standing around 189 cm and weighing roughly 158 kg, he was known for his powerful pushing-and-thrusting style, especially the strength of his right arm. His ring name translates roughly as “Great Sandstorm.”
Shalan began amateur sumo as a teenager in Egypt and achieved success internationally, including medals at junior sumo championships. After becoming fascinated with Japanese sumo through online videos, he moved to Japan in 2011 and joined Ōtake stable.
He entered professional sumo in 2012 and rose quickly through the lower divisions, winning championships in jonokuchi, makushita, and jūryō before reaching the top makuuchi division in November 2013.
Ōsunaarashi competed in Japan’s professional sumo system under Ōtake stable. His rise was rapid and widely covered by Japanese media because of his Egyptian background, Muslim faith, and unusual path into the sport.
His highest rank was Maegashira 1, achieved in November 2015. After injuries and disciplinary issues, he retired from sumo in March 2018 following a traffic accident involving unlicensed driving. After leaving sumo, he signed with Rizin FF and made one MMA appearance.
Ōsunaarashi was defined by a power-based sumo style, built around pushing, thrusting, and forward pressure. His most common winning techniques included yorikiri and tsukidashi, reflecting his direct, forceful approach.
Unlike more technical or belt-focused rikishi, his strength came from explosive upper-body power, aggression off the tachiai, and the ability to overwhelm opponents quickly.
Ōsunaarashi’s impact goes beyond his win-loss record. As the first African and Egyptian sumo wrestler to reach elite professional levels, he became an important international figure in sumo’s modern history. His Muslim faith also made him a unique presence in Japanese sumo, particularly during tournaments that overlapped with Ramadan.
Ōsunaarashi Kintarō was a groundbreaking Egyptian sumo wrestler whose career combined rapid success, cultural significance, and controversy. Rising from amateur sumo in Egypt to Japan’s top makuuchi division, he became one of the most unusual and memorable foreign-born rikishi of the 2010s.
Although his sumo career ended early, his achievements as the first African professional sumo wrestler remain historically important, and his later move into MMA added another chapter to his combat sports journey.
