Asahishō Kōta, born Kōta Matsushima, is a retired Japanese professional sumo wrestler. He competed in professional sumo from 2005 to 2021 and was known for his energetic personality and dramatic pre-match salt-throwing ritual.
Standing at approximately 175 cm and around 140 kg, Asahishō competed as a compact but aggressive rikishi, relying on forward pressure and pushing techniques.
Asahishō began practicing sumo at just three years old and achieved major success in youth competitions, winning national championships during elementary school.
He joined professional sumo in March 2005 under Ōshima stable after graduating from junior high school. Because he did not initially meet the standard height requirement, he entered through a secondary examination process for promising recruits.
In September 2011, he captured the Makushita division championship with a perfect 7–0 record, earning promotion to the salaried sekitori ranks for the first time.
Asahishō was known for a pushing and thrusting style, often relying on aggressive forward attacks rather than belt-grappling techniques.
Although not one of the elite yokozuna or ōzeki-level wrestlers, Asahishō became popular for his personality and entertainment value.
