David Andrew Warner is a former Australian international cricketer and one of the most explosive opening batters of the modern era. A left-handed opening batter and occasional right-arm leg-spin bowler, Warner was known for his aggressive batting and fast scoring, particularly in limited-overs cricket. He played for Australia across all formats and later focused on domestic and franchise cricket after retiring from Tests and ODIs.
Warner made history early in his career by becoming the first Australian cricketer in 132 years to be selected for the national team without playing first-class cricket, debuting in international cricket in 2009.
Warner also captained Australia in ODIs and T20Is and served as vice-captain before the 2018 ball-tampering scandal, which resulted in a 12-month suspension and a lifetime leadership ban from Cricket Australia.
He later returned to international cricket and continued performing at a high level, eventually retiring from Tests and ODIs after the 2023 Cricket World Cup, where he finished as Australia’s leading run-scorer in the tournament.
Warner played domestic cricket for New South Wales and became one of the most successful overseas players in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He represented teams such as Delhi Daredevils (Delhi Capitals) and Sunrisers Hyderabad, leading Sunrisers Hyderabad to the 2016 IPL title as captain.
He won the IPL Orange Cap (leading run-scorer) three times, scored over 6,000 IPL runs, and became one of the most successful overseas batters in the tournament’s history.
Warner also played in leagues such as the Big Bash League (Sydney Thunder), Pakistan Super League (Karachi Kings), Major League Cricket, and other global T20 competitions.
Warner was known for his aggressive opening batting, particularly his ability to dominate fast bowlers and score quickly in the powerplay overs. Despite being relatively short for an international cricketer, his strength, timing, and attacking mindset made him one of the most dangerous opening batters in world cricket.
His ability to score heavily in all formats, including a triple century (335) in Test cricket*, placed him among Australia’s most successful modern batters.
David Warner is one of Australia’s greatest modern opening batters, known for his aggressive batting, match-winning performances, and success across all formats of cricket.
