Patrick James Cummins is an Australian international cricketer and one of the leading fast bowlers of his generation. A right-arm fast bowler and right-handed lower-order batter, Cummins captains the Australia men’s national cricket team in Test and ODI formats and is renowned for his pace, accuracy and leadership. He also captains Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Cummins made his international debut in limited-overs cricket in 2011, becoming the youngest Australian to play Test cricket since 1953 following his Test debut that same year against South Africa, where he took six wickets in the second innings. After injury interruptions early in his career, he returned to prominence from 2015 onwards, establishing himself as a mainstay of Australia’s pace attack. He rose to become world No. 1 ranked bowler in Test cricket, a position achieved by few Australian bowlers in history.
In late 2021, Cummins was appointed captain of Australia’s Test side and later took on ODI captaincy, leading his nation in major series and ICC events. Notable leadership successes include guiding Australia to the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup title and the World Test Championship victory. His leadership and bowling have defined Australia’s seam attack through the early 2020s.
Cummins has also been a key figure in the 2025-26 Ashes series, including taking multiple wickets in pivotal matches, though injuries affected his participation toward the end of the campaign.
Cummins began his professional career in Australian domestic cricket with New South Wales and debuted at a young age in first-class competitions. He developed through the Big Bash League (BBL) with early impact, becoming one of the top wicket-takers in his first BBL season.
In the IPL, Cummins plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad and has taken on leadership responsibility as captain. His performances in franchise cricket have complemented his international workload, establishing him as a global pace figure.
Cummins’s bowling is characterised by pace, movement and precision. He consistently bowls at high speeds, maintains disciplined lines and lengths, and uses seam and swing to trouble batsmen in all conditions. His ability to take early wickets and sustain pressure has made him Australia’s bowling spearhead, particularly in Test cricket.
As captain, Cummins combines tactical acumen with his bowling leadership, shaping Australia’s pace attack strategy and field placements. His performances in high-profile matches — including taking his 300th Test wicket in a major ICC final — illustrate his impact as both a bowler and leader.
