Ravichandran Ashwin is a former Indian international cricketer and one of the most accomplished spin-bowling all-rounders in modern cricket. A right-handed batter and right-arm off-break bowler, Ashwin is renowned for his tactical intelligence, variations in spin, and ability to contribute crucial lower-order runs. Standing about 188 cm (6 ft 2 in), he played for India across all three formats between 2010 and 2024, establishing himself as the leader of India’s spin attack in Test cricket.
Ashwin made his international debut in June 2010 in an ODI against Sri Lanka and later debuted in Test cricket on 6 November 2011 against the West Indies, producing an outstanding performance that included a five-wicket haul and earning Player of the Match on debut.
Over the next decade, he became one of the most dominant spin bowlers in world cricket. Ashwin was particularly influential in India’s Test successes, regularly dismantling opposition batting line-ups with off-spin, the carrom ball, and subtle variations in flight and pace.
He reached several major milestones, including becoming the fastest bowler in Test history to reach 300 wickets in terms of innings and eventually surpassing 500 Test wickets, placing him among the all-time greats of the format.
Ashwin concluded his international career in December 2024, finishing as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket and leaving a lasting legacy as one of the most influential spinners of his generation.
Ashwin began his professional career representing Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket after making his first-class debut in 2006. His performances in domestic tournaments quickly earned him national recognition.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Ashwin initially rose to prominence with Chennai Super Kings, playing a major role in their 2010 and 2011 IPL title victories. Over his IPL career he also represented teams such as Rising Pune Supergiant, Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.
By the end of his IPL career he had taken 187 wickets in more than 220 matches, placing him among the tournament’s leading wicket-takers.
Ashwin’s bowling is defined by right-arm off-spin with numerous variations, including the carrom ball, slider, and subtle changes in release angle. His analytical approach and constant experimentation allowed him to remain effective against both right- and left-handed batters.
With the bat, he developed into a reliable lower-order contributor in Test cricket, scoring six centuries and several match-saving innings. His ability to influence matches with both bat and ball made him one of the most complete spin all-rounders of the modern era.

Combining technical mastery, tactical intelligence, and innovative bowling variations, he dominated Test cricket for over a decade and finished with more than 500 Test wickets and multiple centuries.
