He was also a major presence in the Indian Premier League, where he played for multiple franchises including Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Pune Warriors India, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings.
One of his most memorable seasons came in IPL 2014 with Kolkata Knight Riders, where he scored 660 runs, won the Orange Cap as the tournament’s leading run-scorer, and helped the team win the championship.
Across his IPL career he played over 200 matches, scoring nearly 5,000 runs, placing him among the tournament’s most experienced batters.
Uthappa was known for his aggressive batting approach, often charging bowlers early in his innings to disrupt their rhythm. His willingness to play attacking strokes made him particularly effective in limited-overs formats.
While primarily a top-order batter, he occasionally served as a wicket-keeper and contributed in the field, adding flexibility to team selections. His ability to maintain a high strike rate and adapt to different roles made him valuable in franchise T20 competitions.
