Born in Melilla and raised in Seville, Samu Aghehowa began his football journey at local club AD Nervión before joining the Granada CF youth academy in 2021. He made his senior debut with Granada B in 2022, where he scored 14 goals in 32 appearances. In 2023, he enjoyed a memorable first-team debut in La Liga, finding the net against Atlético Madrid just an hour into his match.
In August 2023, Samu signed with Atlético Madrid before being loaned to Deportivo Alavés, where he scored 8 goals across 34 league matches in the Spanish top flight.
In August 2024, FC Porto secured his services for around €15 million for 50% of his rights, offering a five-year deal with a €100 million release clause. Since joining Porto in the Primeira Liga, Samu has been a revelation. In his debut season, he netted 19 league goals and totaled 27 goals across all competitions, quickly becoming one of Europe’s breakout strikers. His performances earned him prestigious awards, including Primeira Liga Player of the Month and Forward of the Month in December 2024.
Playing Style: Described by The Athletic as a “modern No. 9,” Samu blends a powerful physical presence with impressive pace, sharp finishing with both feet and his head, and relentless pressing. Former Atlético scout Javier Vidales highlighted his versatility as both a target man and a mobile forward, capable of dropping deep, holding up play, and exploiting defensive gaps.
International Career: Eligible to play for both Spain and Nigeria, Samu chose Spain. He progressed through Spain’s youth national teams — from U19 to U21 — before becoming a key member of the Olympic gold medal-winning U23 squad at the Paris 2024 Games. He earned his first senior cap for Spain in November 2024 during a UEFA Nations League fixture.
