Smriti Shriniwas Mandhana is an Indian international cricketer and vice-captain of the India women’s national team. A left-handed opening batter and occasional right-arm medium bowler, she is one of the leading batters of her generation.
She has represented India since 2013 and has built her reputation around elegant strokeplay, timing, consistency, and the ability to score quickly without relying purely on power.
Mandhana grew up in Maharashtra and developed through the state cricket system, eventually representing Maharashtra domestically. She made both her ODI and T20I debuts for India against Bangladesh in April 2013, before making her Test debut against England in August 2014.
She emerged quickly as one of India’s most promising young batters, particularly because of her fluent left-handed technique and ability to score all around the wicket.
She became an important figure in overseas franchise cricket relatively early in her career and later became one of the headline players of the Women’s Premier League with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Mandhana's Test opportunities have been limited by the relatively small number of women’s Tests, but she has nevertheless produced several major innings.
By early 2026, ODI cricket was arguably Mandhana’s strongest international format. She had surpassed 5,000 ODI runs, scored more than a dozen centuries, and maintained an average comfortably above 45. Her combination of consistency and scoring rate made her one of the strongest opening batters in the women’s game.
Mandhana had also crossed 4,000 T20I runs, establishing herself among the highest run-scorers in the history of the format. She has been particularly effective in the powerplay, where her timing and attacking intent allow India to build momentum quickly.
Her 2025 World Cup campaign was particularly important. Mandhana scored 434 runs at an average of 54.25, finishing as the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer and earning selection in the ICC Team of the Tournament as India won its first Women’s ODI World Cup.
Mandhana is primarily an attacking left-handed opening batter, but her aggression is based more on timing and placement than brute force.
Her batting has often been compared stylistically with classical left-handed openers because of how cleanly she strikes through the off side.
Mandhana has frequently served as India’s vice-captain and has also captained the national side when required. At franchise level, she became captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru and led them to the 2024 WPL title, the franchise’s first major championship in either the men’s or women’s competition.
She has therefore developed into not only one of India’s premier batters but also an important senior leader within the national setup.
Mandhana has become one of the biggest international stars of women’s cricket. By 2026 she had scored more than 10,000 international runs, while also accumulating one of the largest century totals in women’s international cricket.
Her significance goes beyond statistics: she has helped popularize women’s cricket in India, become a major figure in franchise leagues internationally, and helped establish the Indian women’s team as one of the strongest sides in world cricket.
