Tabraiz Shamsi is a South African international cricketer known for his left-arm wrist-spin (chinaman) bowling and energetic wicket celebrations. A right-handed lower-order batter, Shamsi has been one of South Africa’s leading spin bowlers in limited-overs cricket, particularly in the T20 format. Over his career he has represented South Africa internationally while also competing extensively in domestic and global franchise leagues.
Shamsi made his ODI debut for South Africa on 7 June 2016 against Australia during the West Indies Tri-Nation Series. Later that year he debuted in Test cricket on 24 November 2016 against Australia, dismissing Nathan Lyon for his first Test wicket. He went on to make his T20I debut on 21 June 2017 against England, gradually becoming a key spinner in South Africa’s limited-overs teams.
After the retirement of veteran leg-spinner Imran Tahir in 2019, Shamsi emerged as South Africa’s primary limited-overs spinner. His performances helped him rise to No. 1 in the ICC T20I bowling rankings in 2021, highlighting his influence in the shortest format.
In July 2022, Shamsi delivered a standout T20I performance with 5/24 against England, becoming the sixth South African to take a five-wicket haul in T20 internationals and surpassing Dale Steyn as South Africa’s leading wicket-taker in T20I history at the time.
He was also selected in South Africa’s squads for major ICC tournaments, including the 2019 Cricket World Cup and the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
These figures highlight Shamsi’s specialization in the shortest format, where his variations and attacking approach have made him a consistent wicket-taking spinner.
Shamsi’s domestic career includes appearances for teams such as Gauteng, Dolphins, KwaZulu-Natal Inland, Lions, and Titans in South African domestic competitions.
He gained early recognition as the leading wicket-taker in the 2017–18 Ram Slam T20 Challenge and also topped the wicket charts in the 2017–18 Momentum One Day Cup, further establishing himself as a premier domestic spinner.
Shamsi bowls left-arm wrist spin, a relatively rare style in modern cricket. His bowling relies heavily on deception, including variations in pace and a sharp googly that challenges batters’ reading of spin.
He is also well known for his animated wicket celebrations, often performing theatrical gestures or magic-trick-inspired celebrations after dismissing batters.
Tabraiz Shamsi is a leading South African spin bowler whose left-arm wrist spin and wicket-taking ability have made him one of the most prominent T20 bowlers in international cricket. From topping the ICC T20I rankings to becoming South Africa’s most successful T20I spinner, Shamsi has built a career defined by variation, flair, and consistent impact in both international and franchise cricket.
