Varun Chakravarthy is an Indian international cricketer and mystery leg-spin bowler known for his varied deliveries and tactical deception. A right-handed lower-order batter and right-arm leg break bowler, Chakravarthy has risen to prominence through his success in both international T20s and major domestic franchise competitions. He represents Tamil Nadu in Indian domestic cricket and has been a key spin option for India in white-ball formats.
Chakravarthy made his T20I debut for India on 25 July 2021 against Sri Lanka, taking the wicket of the Sri Lankan captain in his first match. He made his ODI debut on 9 February 2025 against England, becoming the second-oldest ODI debutant for India.
Across his international career, Chakravarthy has delivered multiple significant bowling displays in limited-overs cricket, including five-wicket hauls in both T20Is and ODIs. In the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, he was influential for India’s campaign, notably taking 3/14 against the Netherlands in a key group-stage win.
In December 2025, he became the highest-rated Indian bowler ever in the ICC T20I rankings, a reflection of his consistency and impact in the shortest format.
Chakravarthy’s domestic career took off during the 2018 Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), where his nine wickets helped Madurai Panthers win their maiden title. He made his List A debut later that year and quickly became a leading wicket-taker for Tamil Nadu in domestic tournaments.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chakravarthy debuted with Kings XI Punjab in 2019 before joining Kolkata Knight Riders in 2020. With KKR he developed into a premier T20 spinner, taking over 100 wickets across his IPL career with a best of 5/20, and often finishing among the tournament’s top wicket-takers.
He has also represented teams such as Tirupur Tamizhans and Dindigul Dragons in various domestic T20 competitions.
Chakravarthy is widely regarded as a mystery spinner, using an array of leg breaks, googlies, and carrom balls to unsettle batters. His bowling is noted for sharp control, deception, and the ability to break partnerships in high-pressure phases of T20 matches. His tactical variety makes him a valuable asset in both the middle overs and when the opposition seeks to accelerate.
While his batting is seldom a primary factor, his contributions with the ball and his understanding of game situations have made him a consistent wicket-taker in franchise and international white-ball cricket.
Varun Chakravarthy is a strategic Indian leg-spin bowler whose variation, tactical guile, and consistent wicket-taking have made him a standout figure in modern T20 cricket. His rise from domestic competitions to becoming a leading international spinner, along with global franchise success, underscores his importance in limited-overs cricket and his ongoing impact on India’s white-ball plans.
