This is the day of the historic Gold Cup, the biggest race of the year for stayers, over a shade less than two and a half miles. Colloquially known as ‘Ladies Day' when designer clothes and millinery masterpieces are on display.
The Gold Cup, first run in 1807, is Ascot's oldest surviving race and the winning owner still receive a gold trophy made by Garrard to keep. British racing anticipates a new legend with the classy chestnut Stradivarius looking to win the feature race four times in succession and land eight Group 1 races. Behind closed doors, in 2020 Stradivarius – ridden by Frankie Dettori - won his third Royal Ascot Gold Cup by a mind-bogglingly 10 lengths.
The Royal win was a dramatic day all in all with the heavy rain, not in Stradivarius's favour, and then the hot favourite getting all ‘coltish' before the off. Trainer, John Gosden blamed his aftershave - but scent or no scent, the win was very much the highlight of the 2020 Flat season and showcased the immense talent of Frankie Dettori.
Will Stradivarius win his fourth Gold Cup, only time will tell….
