Men's Marathon: Takei's Historic Victory
Japan's Yuki Takei stunned the field with a blazing 2:07:33, setting a new course record and claiming his first international marathon win. In a dominant showing, eight of the top 10 male finishers hailed from Japan, with Aoi Ota (2:08:31) and Ryoma Takeuchi (2:08:38) securing second and third. The race took place in perfect conditions, welcoming over 15,000 runners to the Gold Coast.
Takei's strategic performance outpaced the field, showcasing the strength of Japan's long-distance pedigree and cementing him as a rising global star in marathon racing.
Women's Marathon: Ethiopia's Ymer Shines on Debut
In the women's race, Ethiopian debutant Tegest Ymer triumphed in 2:29:27, unleashing a powerful kick in the final kilometer to defeat veteran Caroline Kilel and countrywoman Alemtsehay Zerihun. Ymer's victory marks Ethiopia's first Gold Coast women's title since 2017, and she's already looking to defend her crown.
Regional Glory: Oceania and Queensland Titles
Top regional honors went to Chris Dryden (NZL) and Simone McInnes (AUS), who claimed the Oceania Marathon Championships. Local favorite Riine Ringi retained her Queensland title, while strong performances from Australia's Recce Edwards and Ella McCartney added to the region's proud marathon legacy.
Wheelchair Marathon: Sam Rizzo and Madison De Rozario Dominate
In the wheelchair division, Victoria's Sam Rizzo posted a scorching 1:31:12, the second-fastest time ever on the course. Paralympic gold medalist Madison De Rozario took her fourth Gold Coast title, backed by the roar of enthusiastic local fans.
A Marathon Festival of Firsts
With over 39,000 runners from 50 countries, the 2025 weekend was the largest in event history. The action-packed "Super Saturday" saw course records fall in the Half Marathon, Junior Dash, and 5K, with athletes from across the globe chasing personal bests under clear skies.
